If you've ever felt uncomfortable due to excessive sweating, worried about visible stains on your clothes, or unpleasant odor, the good news is that excessive sweating can be effectively and easily reduced with a simple botox treatment.
What is Excessive Sweating?
Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is the overproduction of sweat in certain parts of the body, usually caused by hyperactive sweat glands. It can be triggered by stress, certain medications, or simply high temperatures. It is more common in men, typically in the armpits and palms.
Botox as a Treatment for Excessive Sweating
Botox is a neuromodulator that, when injected, blocks the communication between nerves and muscles, partially relaxing the muscles and reducing wrinkles on the face and neck. Besides its aesthetic use, one of its most common medical applications is for hyperhidrosis. Botox has been used in medicine for decades, and recently, it has been used for aesthetic purposes in a very diluted form that is safe for patients.
In the skin, botulinum toxin acts on sweat glands, reducing the amount of sweat that is released.
What does the treatment look like?
The treatment is simple and quick, virtually painless, lasting about 10 minutes. By injecting small amounts of botulinum toxin into the skin, excessive sweating is prevented. After the treatment, mild redness and swelling may occur at the injection site, which typically subside within an hour.
Patients are advised to avoid strenuous physical activity for a few days, as well as exposure to high temperatures (such as saunas), and the use of deodorants.
When do results become visible
Initial results can be seen as early as 4 to 5 days after treatment, with full effect usually taking 10 to 14 days. A follow-up visit is recommended to assess the desired result and make any necessary adjustments.
How long do results last
The effect of reducing excessive sweating with botulinum toxin lasts for about 6 months, so this treatment is usually performed twice a year.
