What is hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentations are patches on the skin that are darker compared to the rest of the skin, appearing as spots, patches, or blotches. The shades of hyperpigmentations can vary between brown and black.
Why does hyperpigmentation occur?
Hyperpigmentation is a common occurrence, and its cause is the excessive secretion of the pigment melanin. In most cases, this happens due to sun exposure, age, hormonal imbalance, but it can also result from injuries, skin inflammation, genetics, or lifestyle.
Types of hyperpigmentation:
SUNSPOTS are caused by excessive exposure to the sun or tanning beds, and they appear on the face, neck, décolletage, shoulders, and hands. They are small and brown.
POST-INFLAMMATORY HYPERPIGMENTATION results from skin injuries, such as burns, cuts, acne (where scars are darker than the surrounding skin).
AGE SPOTS appear after the age of 45 as a result of the natural aging process, also caused by sun exposure over the years. Their color can range from brown to black. They most commonly appear on the hands, décolletage, and face
Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation that occurs due to hormonal imbalance in the body. It most commonly affects pregnant women, and the spots appear on the face, becoming more pronounced with sun exposure.
